New PS5 DuelSense controller not charging? Don’t worry, here is the solution.
The PS5 controller is not charging because the front ports are 2.0, and are not providing enough power. Connecting the USB cable to faster 3.0 ports at the back should solve the issue. If the controller is still not charging, then updating its Firmware will definitely solve the issue.
This should solve the issue for most of you but if the issue still persists then don’t worry we have different solution for you.
Why your PS5 controller is not charging?
During my research I found so many reason for your PS5 controller to not charge. Some were related to controller while other were related to the PS5.
So, I’m going to list the most common, so that you can avoid these problems in the future.
The USB Cable is faulty: If you are using a faulty USB cable then it won’t deliver enough power and will not charge your PS5 controller.
Using the front port: Many people on reddit have reported that the front port of the PS5 are not providing enough power, and if you are also using the front port then most it’s likely it’s what causing your controller to not charge.
Damaged battery: If the batteries on DuelSense are damaged then it won’t charge and you can’t expect DuelSense to run wireless on empty fuel.
DuelSense uses a non-removable internal battery, so you will need to pay Sony Service a center a visit to get them changed,
But don’t worry, the chance of this happening is very little, especially if the controller is new.
USB ports have dirt: If the USB port of the PS5 has dust in it then USB will not be able to charge the controller properly. You should clean the USB whenever possible,
Software issues: Having some software issue with a new generation console is not something uncommon. Many people on Reddit, their controller have started acting weirdly after the recent update.
The issue can be either with your PS5 or DuelSense.
Faulty Controller: If the controller has some internal damage then it won’t work perfectly and can cause various issues. The damage can be either manufacturing or Physical. Either way, contacting sony is your best bet.
Internal damage in the console: Just like the controller if the console is faulty then it won’t charge the controller properly. And, if it’s the case then you will need to contact sony.
Some Basic Checkups
Before we start with any of the method I say let’s do a quick basic check.
Check for dust in USB port: Make sure that there is no dust in the USB port of both PS5 and DuelSensse controller.
If there is then clean a Air Compressor Can. If don’t have a one or don’t want to buy then you can blow air through your mouth. Bur I would recommend to use the Compressor Air.
Check if the cable is plug-in properly: Check if the USB is properly inserted into the PS5 and DuelSense, If the cable is not properly inserted then the controller won’t get enough power and will not charge even if the light is flashing.
I have personally faced this one so many times when I forget to properly insert the USB cable in the console. Do make sure that you properly insert the USB cable.
Using Rear use port on PS5
PS5 has 2.0 ports in the front and high speed 3.0 ports at the back and sometimes the 2.0 ports are not able to output enough power.
You can fix this issue by using the port at the back of the console.
This simple trick has solve the issue for so many users, and most likely work for you too. If it didn’t then don’t worry. just follow with the next solution.
Testing the USB cable:
If the above method, didn’t work then it might be possible that the USB cable you are using is faulty.
Try connecting your PS5 controller through a different cable and it charges then it means your cable is faulty and it’s time to buy a new one.
If the issue is still not resolved then follow the next solution.
Updating the Firmware
Like we have discussed before any new controller comes with tons of software bugs and PS5 is no exception. And updating the console and controller can solve most of the issues, so you should keep your PS5 and Duelsense updated,
You will be notified of the update as soon as you boot the PS5, and you will be asked to either “Update Now”, or “Update later.” If by mistake you click on an update later then you can follow these steps:
How to update PS5
Make sure, to save any unsaved data as you will need to restart your PS5,
Updating the console is really easy, just follow these steps:

How to update PS5 controller
Things can get a little bit tricky if you miss out a update on the PS5 controller.
One thing you can do is wait for 24hrs for the update message to pop-up again. If you don’t want to wait then you do is disconnect PS5 from the internet then increase the date by 2, then shut down, then connect it using a USB cable, then restart the PS5 again.
If you need some help then here is the step-by-step process:
- Turn off the Internet: Go to settings > Networks > Setting > Disable the Connect to the internet by sliding it to the left.
- Change Date: Go to Settings > System > Date and Time > Set Manually > Increase the date by 2 (e.g. 10-12) > Press OK.
- After changing the date, Shut down the PS5.
- Then connect the controller through a USB cable.
- Boot the PS5 again by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller.
Now you should be able to see the update option again. Just hit X and wait for it finishes updating.
You can read the whole process here on Reddit.
This should fix any problem you are facing, and if it didn’t then follow the next step.
Test the controller
The best way to test whether the problem is with your console or controller is to try charging it with a different device like PC or Controller.
Try using a different PS5
The best way to verify whether the problem is with your controller or console is throgh test it using a different PS5.
If your friend also has PS5 then, you can try charging the DuelSese with his PS5 and if there are no charging issues then the problem lies with your PS5 console and if the controller is still not charging then the problem might be your controller.
You can try the opposite too. Your PS5 and your friends PS5.
This is the best way to pin-point the issue.
If the PS5 is charging fine with your laptop then the problem might be related to your PS5, and if it’s not charging even with the laptop then the problem is with your controller.
Reset the Controller
If your controller didn’t charge from your friends PS5 or Laptop then the issue lies within your controller.
If the issue is related to the software then Hard resetting it should fix it.
Don’t worry resetting the controller is really easy and it’s won’t cause any issue (additional).
Before you begin resetting your controller. make sure it’s connected to a USB cable.
To reset your controller:
Step 1: Flip the controller around.
Step 2: You will be able to see a small hole on the right of the Sony logo at the back of your controller.
Step 3: Take a small pin, SIM ejector tool will do just fine.
Step 4: Insert that pin into the hole for at least 5 second,
If your controller is connected to the PS5 then a message will POP up on the screen that the controller has been disconnected.
And there you go, you have successfully reset your controller and hopefully charging issue with your PS5 controller.
If you are certain that the problem is with your PS5 console then you should hard reset it.
Hard reset will reset the PS5 software setting to its original factory setting and potentially fixing any issue related to the software.
Note: Don’t forget to create the backup of your saved files because you will lose all your Data.
To Hard reset PS5 we have to boot PS5 in the safe mode, And to boot the console in safe mode, we have to first Shutdown.
First thing we are going to do is shut it down,
If you are not able to shut down normally then you can hold the power button for 7sec until you hear the second beep. This should shut down PS5.
Now, that your PS5 is completely powered off, it’s time for us to boot it in the safe mode.
PRO TIP: Find the USB cable to connect the controller to the PC. It’s necessary to boot PS5 in safe mode.
To boot PS5 in safe mode follow these steps:
- Hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Don’t worry as this can sometimes take up to 10sec.
- Now, you need to connect your controller to PS5 through a USB cable.
- Smash the PlayStation button,
Now, your PS5 should be booted into the safe mode. It’s time for us to Factory reset PS5.
Last Warning: Turn back if you can’t bear the consequences.

Again, you will loose all your data, no exception.
If none of the above methods didn’t work for you then it’s certain that either your console or controller is damaged. And it’s time for you to knock Sony service center door or you can contact them online.
If your PS5 is in warranty and the damage is not physical then you should get a replacement for your controller or console.
